“Extensive facelift” is underway on the Metro network. Large-scale interventions, with the aim of maintaining and renewing the image of Metro stations, both inside and outside, have been underway in recent months, according to a statement by STASY.

Already, at the “Omonoia” station of Line 1, the technical crews have completed the plastering and coloring of the entire station’s masonry – which showed damage mainly due to age and humidity – as well as removing graffiti from surfaces. The station now presents a renewed image, preserving those particular characteristics that make it preserved by the Ministry of Culture. In this context, a study is being prepared for the conservation and restoration of the characteristic ceramic tiles, the majority of which were manufactured in 1923 and installed in 1930, when the station was inaugurated. Similar technical works are also carried out at the “Victoria” station, which is also preserved and has a similar architectural style.

The replacement of old fluorine lamps and lamps with LED technology lamps and lamps is in progress in the Metro network, an intervention that, in addition to the energy and aesthetic benefit, also substantially enhances the sense of safety of passengers. On Line 1 “Kifissia – Piraeus” the lamps have been replaced in 11 stations, the process is progressing in the remaining 13 stations of the Line, while the replacement of the lighting in parts of the tunnels and the 3 Metro Lines has also been completed.

After the completion of the tender process and the signing of a contract with the contractors, two more projects will begin, moving in the direction of further shielding the security of the Line 1 network and the Bus Stations of the STASY network. This is the replacement of 5,600 meters of barbed wire fencing of Line 1 with new, safer railings made of electro-pressing grating, a project with a budget of 761,000 euros, as well as for the reinforcement of 7,500 meters of wire mesh of the fence of the train stations, a budget of 892,000 euros.

On Lines 2 & 3 of the Metro, damage and vandalism at stations such as “Chalandri”, “Nomismatokopio”, “Holargos”, “Evangelismos” and “Sepolia” have been restored, upgrading their overall image and resolving years of technical issues. In particular, at the “Evangelismos” station, anti-flood works were completed in the surrounding area of the station, strengthening its protection against extreme flooding phenomena, corresponding to those of last autumn. At the same time, in the immediate future, the application of self-cleaning coloring, a more effective and longer-lasting technique, will be pilot tested at the “Panormou” station.

Finally, it is noted that the tender has been awarded and the contract for the execution of large-scale renovation and painting works of STASY facilities, amounting to 770,000 euros, excluding VAT, is to be signed, which is estimated to start within September and will mark the start of the 2nd broader technical phase interventions in the Metro network.
