“I bow to the greatness of these parents. They should be proud of their little George. George is a little angel on a difficult mission. “At this moment, he must save our fellow human beings.” With these words and with a broken voice, the Head of the Children’s ICU of Rio Hospital spoke to pelop.gr about the decision of the parents of 2-year-old George from Agrinio to donate their child’s organs to help other children in need.
Little George has been hospitalized since last Friday at the Children’s ICU of the University Hospital of Rio. It all started when he swallowed an object, blocking his airways and suffering a heart attack. Efforts were made to restore cardiac function, which was achieved. However, this opposition caused him very serious damage, as a result of which he was transported urgently to the University Hospital of Rio in Patras.
This morning, after a discussion that the parents had with Andreas Iliadis, they decided to donate the organs of little George.
“They gave them with a lot of love” says Mr. Iliadis to pelop.gr and describes the moving moment, not being able to hide his charge: “My mother hugged me and told me” now we have to save other children ” . She said this the moment I told her I could not save her child and asked her to help other children. “Even in his worst dream, one should not make such decisions.”
As Mr. Iliadis noted, it is extremely rare to have organ donation at such an age and they are already in consultation with the 6th RAE, with the hospital being ready to receive teams that will come to receive the organs of little George. In fact, it is not ruled out that teams may come from abroad, as as we said above, it is rare to donate organs at such a young age.
Concluding, the head of the Children’s ICU stressed that today, all of Greece should stand by these parents.
