A patient entered the operating room for a hand operation and came out with a burn on his left leg. The injury appears to have been caused by a faulty heating blanket placed on the young patient when he complained of being cold. The case took place in a private clinic in 2019 and was taken to the audience of the Single-Member Criminal Court of Thessaloniki.

The court found the anesthesiologist, the head of the clinic’s technical service and its legal representative guilty of gross negligence. Each of them was sentenced to 10 months in prison, with a 3-year suspension, while the court, with the same decision, acquitted four people who had been brought to trial, including the surgeon, two nurses and the legal representative of the company selling the heated blanket .

Accepting the prosecutor’s proposal, the court accepted that the specific device did not work properly, due to the use of an inappropriate part, as a result of which it raised the temperature to 54 degrees, causing the burn to the then 22-year-old patient.
