Residents and businessmen of the island of Faiaki send an SOS who see the city center, but not only, “choking” with garbage every day, as there is so much tourism and the Municipality’s garbage trucks are not enough to be able to collect the garbage that accumulates in the garbage cans.

SKAI’s report from the most central parts of the island is revealing, and captures exactly the serious problem. Buckets overflowing day and night, foci of contamination, dirt and stench in one of Greece’s most powerful tourist destinations, create an unacceptable condition for both residents and tourists of the island who are forced to walk past “mountains” of garbage every day.

And this at a time when, according to INSET data, the island of Corfu will receive almost half a million people by air alone in August (474,429) tourists, with this number being the same for July (459,568).

Imagine all these visitors wanting to take a commemorative photo in Liston Square or the Corfu Fortress – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and with their clicks, in addition to the beauty of the island, they also capture the piles of garbage.
