The authorities will proceed with a new World War II bomb disposal at the site of the former Hellinikon airport.

The neutralization will take place at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, August 2, and it is likely that there will be an explosion.

The bomb is large (on the order of 500 pounds, about 226 kilograms), petrified, and located 500 meters away from the nearest residences.

Huge protective embankments will be created around the bomb to absorb the shock wave and as experts assure there will not be the slightest disturbance or impact on the surrounding areas, apart from – perhaps – the noise. Traffic arrangements will not need to be made as the bomb is located away from residential areas.

“World War II may have ended almost eight decades ago, but its scars are still present in our country – even underground. Another bomb was found at the site of the reconstruction works at the former airport, we are in constant cooperation with all the relevant agencies and the relevant Department of the Army, so that this neutralization process can be done in an absolutely perfect way. There is no cause for concern”, assures the mayor of Glyfada Giorgos Papanikolaou.
