Within a few minutes of being informed, the municipality of Aristoteli faced the problem of sewage leakage at a point on the coast of Ierissos, at the pier at the height of Vas. Georgiou Street and with a direction of 200 meters towards the central pier (Iroon Street) and 200 meters towards the municipal campsite. Earlier, the deputy governor of Halkidiki had issued a decision to temporarily ban the use of the coast and swimming in the specific area until the problem is resolved. Swimming will be allowed again, as soon as the mandatory quality checks are done.

The municipality of Aristoteli reports that the sewage leakage is attributed to a voltage fluctuation in the electricity supply line of the area’s sewage pumping station which tripped the protection fuses of the equipment.

“The limited leakage would have been even smaller, if local actors who happened to see the problem at the moment it appeared, first took care to inform the responsible officials of the Municipality proposing a solution to the problem and then the other authorities not competent to deal with it, hoping to they take advantage in opposition, even reaching the point of trying to prevent the taking of measures by the competent services and authorities. The staff of the municipality of Aristoteli, under the personal supervision and presence of the competent Deputy Mayor, solved the problem within a few minutes of being informed, restoring the normal power supply to the pumping station and stopping the further leakage of sewage” is noted in a statement of the municipality of Aristoteli.

For the comprehensive information of the residents and visitors of Ierissos, the municipality of Aristoteli points out that:

The mechanism of the municipality was in the necessary readiness, precisely because of the frequency of the phenomena of voltage fluctuation and micro-interruptions of electricity supply, a problem for which the communications of the mayor St. Valianos himself have been continuous in recent times with DEDDIE.

The problem would not appear even with a power outage (and it will not reappear in the future), with the completion of the large drainage project carried out by the Municipality of Aristoteli in Ierissos, which is temporarily suspended with the intervention of the Archaeological Service. This project shields the area much more effectively even against such rare phenomena, which are due to the age of the infrastructure and decades of poor workmanship.

The municipality of Aristoteli is in continuous and close cooperation with the Port Authorities for the implementation of the temporary ban, as well as with the Directorate of Public Health and Social Care of the Regional Unit of Halkidiki, which is responsible for monitoring and confirming the quality of the waters of the bathing beaches by carrying out sampling and analysis, in the shortest possible time. Corresponding samplings will be carried out by the municipality itself.
