Police officers of the DI.AS team dived into the sea in their uniforms to save a fisherman who was in danger
The preparedness and self-sacrifice of police officers of the Dias team who dived into the waters of Drapetsona saved a fisherman who was trapped under his overturned boat. The cause is, as he complains, the storms caused by a passenger catamaran that entered the port of Piraeus at excessive speed.
As can be seen in the video, police officers of the DI.AS team dive into the sea in their uniforms to save a fisherman who is in danger as his boat has capsized. At a distance of 30 meters from the shore, in Drapetsona, the fisherman is trapped under the boat and is fighting to stay afloat.
“I’ve been fighting in the sea for almost 3 quarters of an hour, I can’t stand it any longer, I would drown. The DI.AS team comes, 3 children dive in and come and help 2 of the coast guard and cut the boat with a knife and then they took me out”, says the rescued person, Lambros Doukakis.
Speaking to SKAI, Mr. Doukakis notes that he was not trapped in the longline due to his wrong handling, but due to a large wave caused by a liner that entered the port of Piraeus at a higher speed than intended.
“The boat is supposed to come in at 11.8 miles and this one came in at 30 miles, it caused a 20 meter swell. I’m a floating person from this little boat, I lived, I ate, now they drowned me, what should I do, where should I go?”, says Mr. Dukakis
According to the current operating regulations of the port of Piraeus, ships upon their arrival and departure enter the port at a reduced speed of 9 knots to avoid accidents.
According to port officials, the ship was carrying a multi-injured woman and the captain had informed that he was arriving at the port at a faster speed in order to transfer the injured woman to a hospital.
“It was transporting multiple injuries from a traffic accident in Kythnos, an event for which the master had informed the maritime traffic management center of the central port authority of Piraeus”, say Coast Guard sources.
The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the Piraeus Port Authority.
