“There has been a lot of talk about coffee. It is not a new provision,” said Ms. Dimoglidou
Clarifications regarding what ultimately applies to coffee while driving were given by the Police press representative Konstantina Dimoglidou speaking to Mega.
“KOK stipulates that the driver’s hands should not be occupied with anything other than driving – it does not mention coffee – but that the driver’s hands must be on the steering wheel and his attention naturally on the road. It is important not to occupy the our hands while driving, whether with a cell phone or anything else,” the officer initially said.
“There has been a lot of talk about coffee. It’s not a new arrangement, but if someone drives and constantly holds a glass of coffee in one hand, you understand that they are not able to cope with driving and respond to something extraordinary.” said Ms. Dimoglidou.
It is noted that in paragraph two (2) of article 13 of the Road Traffic Code obliges the drivers of the vehicles to have full freedom of movement so that they are able to carry out the necessary maneuvers in every situation. The administrative fine it is 100 euros and license removal for 30 days.
To the question “if the driver takes a sip of the coffee, will he be asked to pay a fine of 100 euros?”, the press representative of EL.AS. He answered clearly “I don’t think there is a citizen who has received such a call. What is being said is exaggerated.”
In fact, Mrs. Dimoglidou added “Nothing has changed for the Greek police, the same calls are recorded now. What I’m making clear is that under no circumstances can we occupy our hands with something else when we’re driving.”
