“Obviously they haven’t seen the documentary Famagusta”, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis responds to the Turkish criticisms and threats hurled by the occupied territories as well as by Ankara, for the screening of the Famagusta series on Netfix from September 20.

“Nobody can dispute the Turkish Invasion of 1974. The series sends very important messages. I have watched it and messages are being sent about the need to resolve the Cyprus problem and the relations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots,” said the Cypriot president, according to philenews.com.

As Manolis Kostidis reports from Istanbul, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in which it states: “The series entitled ‘Famagusta’, which will be broadcast on a digital platform, serves the black propaganda of the ‘Greek Cypriot administration of Southern Cyprus’ (Cypriot Republic) by distorting the historical events. This series is a great disrespect to the honored memories of the Turkish Cypriots who were massacred by Greek Cypriot gangs in the period 1963-74.”

Omer Celik, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of Turkey spoke of distortion of the “Peace Operation” (as the Turkish side calls the invasion) and of propaganda by the Greek Cypriot side.
