Ionian University: “Embraces” its students from Ukraine and Russia

His undergraduate students from Ukraine, but also Russia, “embraces” the Ionian Universityat the initiative of the rector Andrea Florouensuring their accommodation and food throughout the following months and for as long as necessary.

This morning, the rector received in his office a group of Ukrainian students with whom he discussed the situation of their families in Ukraine, as well as the difficulties faced by students today after the unfavorable developments in their country.

The rector pledged for their free accommodation and food, as well as their psychological support, if necessary, through the competent structures of the academic institution.

“The Ionian University is currently attended by a total of 29 young men and women from Ukraine and Russia. They are students who have been at the center of an irrational vortex and are faced with the stress of their families’ daily lives, the economic and social impact of the war and the anxiety of continuing their studies smoothly. The Ionian University stands by these young people, in a practical way and for as long as required, ensuring living conditions capable of creating a framework of security and guaranteeing the continuation of studies “, said the rector of the Ionian University, Andreas Floros.

At the same time, in cooperation with the Corfu Chamber of Commerce and the Hotel Owners Association of the island, bodies that responded immediately to the rector’s call, are expected to ensure the daily needs of Ukrainian and Russian students, as well as their employment, for those who wish.

“This is a practical humanitarian movement, to which we must all contribute,” said during the meeting that took place in the office of the rector, the president of the Corfu Chamber, George Chondrogiannis, accompanied by a member of the Board, Spyridona Spai.

“The University’s relationship with the local community is a family affair and we will support it with all our might,” he said. Mr. Spais.

For his part, the president of Corfu Hoteliers Charalambos Voulgaristalking to the students from Ukraine, promised them his full support and ensuring their immediate employment if they so wish.

At the Ionian University are currently studying 10 Ukrainian and 19 Russian students who, by decision of the Rector’s Authority, are expected to be given the same support and assistance, as after the developments in the interbank system, these students are unable to collect money, so they are or will be in financial difficulty.

There will be no segregation of our students from Ukraine and Russia. “We will stand by them in whatever we need,” he said Mr. Floroswho will meet directly with the Russian students.

“Ukrainians and Russians are for us brotherly peoples and it is our honor that they came to Corfu to study”, concluded the president of the Chamber, George Chondrogiannis.
