Due to the measures for COVID – 19, the big events for the culmination of the carnival, such as the big parade and the burning of the carnival king, may not take place in Patras, however the city lives in carnival rhythms during the last three days of Carnival, wanting in this way to send an optimistic message.
Carnival chariot parades, theatrical performances, carnival theatrical events, happenings and concerts, while adhering to health protocols, compose a festive setting, complemented by carnival constructions placed in squares, sidewalks and streets.
Today, Sunday, the last day of Carnival, it is planned to observe the customs of the chocolate war and the burning of fireworks.
In particular, according to the program announced by the public benefit enterprise of the municipality, “Carnival of Patras” and as long as the weather conditions allow, at 11:00 in the morning will be in the square of High Alonia, a group of folk music, while at 12 : 00 at noon a musical chariot will parade in the city center, accompanied by the throwing of chocolates by the unions “Chocolate throwers”, “Chocolate fights”, “Chocolate races”, “Chocolate mania”, “Chocolate players” and “Chocolate rain”.
At 16:00 in the afternoon there will be happening paragliding with motorcycles, in collaboration with the paragliding club of Patras.
A few hours later, at 20:00 in the evening, fireworks will be burned at the pier of Agios Nikolaos, in the old port, while at 20:30 there will be a concert with “The Swingin ‘Cats” at the old slaughterhouses.
In the meantime, since last Friday afternoon, an increase in the number of visitors has been recorded in Patras for the last three days of Carnival, according to the data from the intercity KTEL, but also from the reservations of rooms in the hotels of the city.
The increase in visitors is also reflected in the traffic in the city center, especially in the evening.
This year ‘s carnival events will end tomorrow, Shrove Monday, with the awarding of the prizes of the 57th game of the “hidden treasure”.
