“The anti-flood shielding of Attica is a top priority”, said the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, during an autopsy he carried out in the Kainourgio stream in the Municipality of Marathon, in order to inspect the progress of the cleaning works carried out by the competent crews of the Region.

As Mr. Hardalias pointed out: “Until today, the Region of Attica has completed the cleaning of 18 streams in the municipalities of Saronikos and Acharna which were affected by the fires of the previous year, in a total area of 9.7 kilometers, as well as the cleaning of the 800 meters of the central stream of Pallini.

At the same time, by the end of October, 19 more stream cleanings in Eastern Attica will have been completed in almost 20.9 km, in high risk areas, always in close cooperation with the Municipalities and with our crews to intervene immediately where there is a need. Work is also continuing at a rapid pace on the tiled sections in Kifissos, Podoniftis and the rest of the rivers in the Basin.

Hardalias

Especially now for him Municipality of Marathon where we are today, immediately after the fire of this year’s August, the largest part of the Rapentosa stream has already been cleaned, the work will soon be completed here in the Kainurgio stream in an area of 2.5 kilometers and we are also continuing in the Marouga stream”.

In his statements, Mr. Nikos Hardalias he placed particular emphasis on the need for the Regions to acquire enhanced powers in view of the upcoming changes with the new “Charter” of Self-Government that is coming up for consultation in the near future by the Ministry of the Interior and at the same time pointed out the need for increased funding with more resources.

As he pointed out: “What is very important to be able to be really effective is to stop all this merry-go-round of responsibility, regarding which streams are the responsibility of the region, which streams are the responsibility of the municipalities, which streams are the responsibility of Ministry of Infrastructure. We are waiting for the conclusion of a specific initiative by the government on this matter, and most importantly, we expect the financial staff to provide us with all the required resources. Because powers and proclamations, without the existence of the necessary money at the same time, are essentially proclamations without commitment. We understand that there is budgetary pressure, but everything that concerns human life, the protection of citizens’ property and the natural environment, is a constitutional imperative and an immediate priority.”

The cleaning of streams in Eastern Attica in numbers

  1. Until today, the cleaning of 10 streams in the Municipality of Saronikos, with a total area of 7.1 kilometers, 8 streams in the Municipality of Acharne with a total area of 2.6 kilometers, as well as the cleaning of the central stream of the Municipality of Pallini, with an area of 800 meters, has already been completed.
  2. 19 stream cleanings are underway, with a total area of 20.9 kilometers, which are expected to be completed by the end of October.

In particular:

  • 5 streams in the Municipality of Saronikos (Agios Georgios stream 2.6 km, Petas stream 1.2 km, Koliantrikos Kouvaras stream 1.5 km, central Kouvara stream 700 meters, technical works of the beach 500 m)
  • 2 streams in the Municipality of Dionysos (stream of Megalo Alexandrou 2.5 km., Pararematios M. Alexandrou in Stamata 250 m.),
  • 4 streams in the Municipality of Marathon (Rapentoza stream in the Vrana area 1.2 km., Kainouri stream 2.5 km., Marouga dam 500 m., Marouga stream 800 m.)
  • 8 streams in the Municipality of Acharnon (Pashalia stream in Tatoi 1.6 km, technical stream of Agios Dionysios at Neromanas site 400 m, Agios Dionysios dam 300 m, stream of Siatis Thrakomakedona 1.3 km, Aspropotamos Parnitha stream 800 m ., Pararematios Echatias Primary School 700 m., Agia Kyriaki stream 300 m. and Agia Paraskevi stream 1.2 km).

Especially in the Municipalities Acharnon, Saronic and Marathon five garages of the Attica Region are on their feet every day.

Mr. Hardalias was informed in detail about the progress of the work and detailed the difficulties of the project. “You understand that this is a labyrinthine process, it is a “Lernaean Hydra”, since in every stream we clean, something new arises, a new difficulty, which we are asked to face in cooperation with the mayors. Here we are, in Marathon, the stream is being cleaned right now and a little further down, it’s muddy. In other words, its actual flow is stopped, in order to ensure any access of residents to the area”, he characteristically underlined.

He added: “In 2010, when the responsibility of cleaning the streams passed to the District, the resources that were transferred at the same time, were resources that echoed the facts of that time. Today, however, the facts have changed. The financial staff of the government has given the possibility of revisions to all the projects, as the prices and costs of the projects have multiplied, and the main thing is that the endurance limits of the projects, you realize that after about 15 years, they have to be readjusted. The climate data were different in 2010 and they are different today. The discussion on clarifying the division of responsibilities must begin immediately and without delay. For this matter, I make it clear that as a District Governor and as an active citizen, I will not tolerate any discount. We run, as you can see, at every level, so that we can be efficient. To the question of whether Attica is armored, my answer is that “no, it is not armored”. But we are fighting to be able to secure the best possible terms. We will always speak honestly, seriously, composedly, and most importantly, we will give answers in the field.”

As it was pointed out during the autopsy of the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalia, next week the cleaning work will start in the Municipality of Dionysos in the stream of the Great Alexander, in an area of 2.5 km, in Rodopoli.
The Regional Governor of Attica, who performed the autopsy together with the Mayor of Marathon Stergios Tsirkas, was accompanied by the Special Secretary of the Region of Attica Elena Rapti, the Director of Technical Services of Eastern Attica Giorgos Psaromichalakis, a representative of the contractor company that has undertaken the project and engineers of the Region of Attica.
