Opinion – Cozinha Grossa: 2/3 of Brazilian women suffered sexual harassment in restaurants and bars

While there is a deputy traveling to Ukraine to hit on vulnerable women, here in our backyard the situation is not pretty. Two out of three Brazilian women have been harassed in restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Here, without war, by “good” men who frequent these places.

I reproduce below, without further comment, some figures from the research carried out for the whiskey brand Johnnie Walker and for Women Friendly – ​​a startup that certifies houses that are committed to curbing sexual harassment on their premises – by the Studio Ideas institute.

2,221 women over 18 years of age were interviewed, in all regions of Brazil and of all age, ethnic and income groups.

66% have already suffered some type of harassment in restaurants, bars and clubs.

78% is the proportion of harassed women who have worked in homes in this sector.

53%, more than half of them, have already stopped going to places after suffering violence.

50% never go alone to bars, restaurants and clubs.

8% prefer to go out alone.

41% only feel safe when they are with a group of friends.

13% never feel safe

47% faced the harasser’s insistence on talking to them, even without receiving attention.

40% of women were held by the arm or hair when the aggressor was not reciprocated.

13% were forcefully kissed.

12% were touched in the private parts.

6% were victims of “good night, Cinderella,” when the abuser adds a narcotic substance to the woman’s drink.

93% of criminals were regulars at the establishments.
