570 firefighters with 160 vehicles and 28 pedestrian units are operating at the scene – Schools are closed in Xylokastro
Firefighters continue to fight the fire in Xylokastro Corinthia, which broke out on Sunday as well, with scattered outbreaks in hard-to-reach places. Two people tragically died in the fire.
At the moment there is no unified front, while 570 firefighters with 160 vehicles and 28 foot units are working on the scene.
The Municipality of Xylokastro – Eurostini announced that, due to the extraordinary conditions that have resulted from the fire, all schools will remain closed today and Wednesday.
“The safety of students and residents is our absolute priority, and we ask all parents and guardians to be regularly informed by the Municipality’s official communication channels of any further developments. Thank you for your understanding and we remain at your disposal” is emphasized.
The first impression shows that the fire has burned about 40-50,000 acres.
The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) with a request to provide aerial assistance to deal with the forest fires in Corinthia.
The assistance to our country includes three CL-415 firefighting aircraft, two of which are from Italy and one from Croatia.
