With the signing of the permits for the temporary installation and operation of another five desalination units for the islands of Alonissos, Kalymnos, Pserimos and Telendos, by the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Stefanos Ghikas, the effort to deal with the effects of the prolonged water shortage in the our islands.

It is emphasized that until today, since the beginning of the year, they have been issued 25 licenses of temporary installation and operation of desalination units on our islands, a record number, which proves the intensity of the phenomenon.

Mr. Gikas specifically emphasizes: “Dealing with water scarcity and the effects of the climate crisis on our islands require vigilance, the mobilization of agencies, targeted and reliable interventions.

The mandate of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in cooperation with the relevant Ministries and especially with the Ministry of Environment and Energy, is to deal radically and on a permanent basis with the scarcity of water on our islands. And in this direction we are moving».

The recommendations of the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Islands Policy, which were approved by Mr. Ghikas, specifically concerned:

  • License for the temporary installation and operation of a desalination plant with a capacity of 100m3/d in the “Agios Dimitrios” area of ​​Alonissos on behalf of the Municipality of Alonissos.
  • License for the temporary installation and operation of a desalination plant with a capacity of 100m3/d on the island of Pserimos on behalf of DEWA Kalymnos.
  • License for the temporary installation and operation of a desalination plant with a capacity of 100m3/d on the island of Telendos on behalf of DEYA Kalymnos.
  • License for the temporary installation and operation of two desalination units with a capacity of 100m3/d each in the “Skalia” settlement of Kalymnos Island on behalf of DEWA Kalymnos.
