Three monks of the old brotherhood of I.M. Mount Athos apologized today to the 4th investigator of Thessaloniki, accused of detonating explosive devices, with unknown flammable material, in April 2023, at a place where two monks of the new brotherhood live on Athos.
Among other things, they apologized for the felony of the explosion with human danger, an act they denied, speaking of “methods” and “untruths” on the part of the new brotherhood.
A prosecutor and an investigator decided to release them under the condition of being banned from leaving the country.
The specific incident, for which a preliminary investigation was conducted, took place – according to the case file – near the buildings of the Seat of Agios Tryphonos of the Holy Monastery.
It seems, however, to be part of the perennial dispute between the two fraternities of Esfimenou.
The new brotherhood of monks was formed, by decision of the Holy Community of Mount Athos, in 2005, and since then it is considered legal, but the old one refuses to hand over the monastery, resulting in occasional tensions and incidents.
