The so-called “king of diamonds” Benny Steinmetz, were arrested on Sunday by police officers at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport

Steinmetz was traveling on his personal jet from Tel Aviv to Athens, and was arrested as he was found to be outstanding on Romania’s international arrest warrant for organizing a criminal organization.

The Israeli cross was brought to the prosecutor’s office today Monday and was released on bail of 5,000 euros and restrictive conditions, the ban on leaving the country.

It operates in the mining, energy, real estate and diamond mining industries. He is the chairman and co-founder of the charitable trust, Agnes & Beny Steinmetz Foundation.

On 10 March 2016, Steinmetz was indicted in absentia by Romania’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate, on charges of illegally recovering the inheritance of Paul Filip Hoentsholern.

In February 2018, a court in Romania rejected a request to issue a warrant for his arrest.

He was re-arrested in Athens in March 2022, but the court rejected an extradition request by Romanian authorities, ruling that Steinmetz’s right to a fair trial in Romania was violated and that he faces a real risk of inhuman and degrading treatment if extradited. The decision was affirmed on appeal.
