Yesterday, Wednesday, October 23, a 55-year-old resident of South Pelion was brought before the Prosecutor of the Three-member Misdemeanor Court of Volos for manslaughter and failure to report the discovery of a body.

In court the accused, who is a professional fisherman, did not admit the charge of manslaughter but accepted the charge of failure to report the discovery of a body.

According to thenewspaper, the Port Authority of Volos had issued an announcement “retrieving the unfortunate 74-year-old snorkeler in its nets, but threw him back into the sea, without informing the Authorities”.

In its relevant announcement, the Ministry specifically mentions the following:

“Regarding the investigations and the identification of a missing underwater fisherman in Volos on 12.09.2021, it is known that a 52-year-old citizen was arrested, yesterday evening, on the beach “MELANI” of Pelion, Prefecture of Magnesia, for violating article 181 of the Criminal Code. – Law 4619/2019 (non-announcement of finding a dead person).

Specifically, in the early hours of yesterday, the 52-year-old, while fishing with an A/C boat in the sea area “XYNOVRYSI” of Pelion, retrieved his nets, in which the 74-year-old missing underwater fisherman was found entangled, unconscious, while in then, he threw him back into the sea with his nets, without reporting the incident to the Authorities. A preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Central Port Authority of Volos”.

The chronicle

On September 11, 2021, a 74-year-old retired banker attempted to go spearfishing. He was found dead early in the morning of Sunday, September 12, after the authorities were mobilized, because his relatives could not locate him. His son has gone to the beach of Melani, where he spotted the car in the early hours of Sunday and immediately informed the Police Department of South Pelion properties and the Port Authority. Two boats from Skiathos and Volos and a patrol boat with a private diver immediately sailed to the area to search with searchlights, but to no avail. Finally the unfortunate man was located near a rock, submerged five meters from the shore and at a shallow depth.

The court found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 21 months in prison suspended for three years
