Following the concern caused by the complaint by two NGOs Bloom and Foodwatch that canned tuna is highly contaminated with mercury, EFET issued a statement.

EFET reassures consumers about the safety of the product, it is noted that it conducts long-term controls for the levels of heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium) in fish of Greek origin, European origin and third countries, including canned fish.

In the announcement it states that “in the last 5 years, tests have been carried out for heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead in fresh and frozen catch, but also in canned catch and all samples were compliant”

The president of the Food Control Organization, Antonis Zambelas, appeared reassuring today.

Speaking to ERT, Mr. Zambelas pointed out that the controls are permanent and that the samples for the last three years were zero for heavy metals.

The president of EFET also stated that the findings of researchers in European countries will be re-checked where the problem arose, in order to determine whether additional checks need to be carried out in Greece as well.
