We are proud of our leadership in automotive safety. And, of course, we’re honored that TIME named the Volvo EX90’s Driver Understanding System one of the Best Inventions of 2024.

Today, TIME reveals its annual Best Inventions list, which includes 200 prominent innovations that the medium believes will change our lives. In this year’s list, TIME includes as a winner in the Automotive category the driving behavior analysis system, which is standard equipment in our new all-electric flagship.

The EX90’s Driving Analysis System is a new, ground-breaking safety feature that uses real-time detection technology to sense whether a driver is under the influence of alcohol, tired or distracted, so the car can intervene to offer support if needed .

In some cases, the EX90 will warn the driver with a momentary vibration, and if that doesn’t have the desired effect, more intense and continuous warnings will follow. In the event that something unexpected happens, such as if a driver falls asleep, the EX90 can safely stop and warn other road users by activating the hazard (“alarm”) lights.

The driving behavior analysis system in the EX90 is one of our latest safety inventions, thanks to the know-how we have gained from our 50+ years of real-world research. Derived from our knowledge of how drivers interact with their cars in real life, the system helps fill one of the major gaps remaining in zero collisions by supporting people based on an understanding of their behaviors and needs.

Safety is always our top priority. The modern three-point seat belt is one of our most important contributions to safety. We introduced it in 1959 and then allowed it to be freely used by everyone, resulting in an estimated* saving of over a million lives.
