After Governor João Doria (PSDB) confirmed this Wednesday (9) the release of the use of mask in open places in the state of São Paulo, doubt arose among São Paulo residents: the rule will also apply to outdoor spaces. free located in the capital’s restaurants and bars?

The city of São Paulo clarified the new rules this Thursday (10) – and the answer is yes.

The decree published in the Official Gazette releases the use of masks to protect against Covid-19 also in open places of bars, restaurants, clubs and other establishments.

To better explain what are considered open spaces, the City of São Paulo, the Health Surveillance Coordination and the Municipal Health Department stated in a note that “these are spaces where there are no restrictions by walls or partitions, with air circulation or ventilation complete”.

An example cited is the bus terminals. As they do not have walls that impede the circulation of air, they are considered open places – therefore, there is no need to wear a mask there. On the other hand, spaces surrounded by walls, partitions and with a roof are considered closed – therefore, the use of protection remains mandatory. To follow the example of the terminals, buses are considered closed places.

Returning to the gastronomic area, terraces, gardens, sidewalks and other ventilated areas, without barriers or outdoors, will be able to dispense with the use of safety equipment on the face. But restaurant lounges and indoor bar counters, for example, are not. At these points, the mask should continue to be used if the person is not drinking or eating.

Still according to the prefecture, the changes in the rules were only possible because of the number of people vaccinated. In the capital, this percentage reached 100% of the adult population with two doses and more than 80% among children, for example.
