A new urgent preliminary examination was ordered by the Director of Public Prosecutions for the smallpox cases detected in Magnesia.

The ex officio preliminary, according to thenewpaper, concerns a case for violation of disease prevention measures that may result in danger to animals as well as for breach of duty.

The prosecuting authorities ask the Veterinary Service to inform them if all the necessary procedures were followed to limit the spread of the disease. To provide proof of the acquisition – purchase of the affected animals as well as all the documents of the breeders from all the breeding units. How many and which livestock units are affected as well as the number of infected animals that will be killed and whether all those involved have been tested. Finally, what are the restrictions set by the Veterinary Service.

In addition, what actions have been taken to landfill the cases they have so far. If all the municipalities of the Region have designated a sanitary landfill in emergency cases, as defined by the Community directive, which has more force than national legislation.

Then, through the preliminary investigation, an order was given by the Prosecutor of Volos to the Veterinary Service of P.E. Magnesia and under the supervision of the Police, for an autopsy report to the president of the goat and sheep breeders, Mr. Terzakis.

He was allegedly notified of a document with prohibitions and restrictions on his livestock unit. A document which bears his signature on October 31, 2024. According to this document, he was informed of prohibitions such as to leave his unit himself or that no people enter his unit without the necessary permission of the competent body. Until it is established whether he himself is the carrier of the disease, he must observe sanitary measures. As well as what is happening on his farm and where he has moved the dead animals. If he traded the derivatives of the affected animals, to which producers and in what quantity? Finally, to present and check all their documents.

It is worth noting that Mr. Terzakis himself went to the prosecutor’s office yesterday, protesting and accompanied by two other livestock farmers, asking for a solution as the Municipality of Volos has not yet designated a site for the landfill.
