The Aitolikos habitat is home to many migratory ringed birds, such as a brown-headed gull from Poland and a phoenix from France
In the area of ltidal lagoon of Messolonghi – Aitoliko every year at this time many species arrive looking for shelter and warmth migratory birds from the northern and central Europe
Birds cover distances of kilometers traveling for days. A brown-headed gull, observed in the port of Aitolikos, came from Poland., while a phoenix, traveled from the France.
A kingfisher from the Czech Republic was lucky. As soon as he reached Aitoliko, he hit a glass window, was seriously injured and died.
“The seriously injured bird was found by a tour guide. We found out that he had a ring on his leg. Under the code it said Museum Praha. Then, we made the prescribed form, for the search of the ringed bird and sent it to the Greek Bird Ringing Center. They answered us that the kingfisher came from her Czech Republic. In the relevant document that arrived from Prague to the Center, it appears that the beautiful bird traveled for 51 days and traveled 1218 kilometers,” said Lambros Harelos, responsible for the Environmental Awareness Department of the Cultural and Educational Association “Aitoliko”.
In a quiet habitat in the heart of the lagoon, in a water state, a colony of rare waterfowl, in the “port” of Aitolikosa large number of these migratory birds are observed.
In the habitat of Aitolikos, many are accommodated ringed migratory birds. For a silver pelican and other phoenixes, they expect answers soon, about the countries they came from.
In the Department of Environmental Awareness of the Cultural and Educational Association Aitoliko, they systematically observe the area and gradually spot some birds that have a ring on their leg.
At the same time, they also cooperate with the Management Unit of Messolonghi National Park of OFYPEKA in the context of all records, as the area is protected, it is a National Park.
As Lambros Harelos reports, after photographing them and succeeding in distinguishing the code, they contact the Hellenic Bird Ringing Center. EKDP is a member of EURING (European Union for Bird Ringing) and acts as a representative of Greece, in matters of ringing and in general marking of wild birds.
“We spend too many hours bird watching. It’s something we love, it’s our hobby. And the most important thing is, how we learn the incredible and long journeys that the birds make to come to our area”, says Mr. Harelos.
As he points out, during the observation, the birds are calm – but when there is poaching in the habitat, they leave and look for another shelter.
“Where there is poaching, we don’t find the numbers of birds we expect. They are changing places, looking for a calmer area.”
