Just a few days… away, on 30/11, is the operation of the main line of the Thessaloniki metro, the construction of which brought to the surface 300,000 archaeological finds and it cost, together with the extension of Kalamaria, the amount of 3 billion. euros, as pointed out by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, in his statements in the context of the guided tour given today to journalists who had the opportunity to board one of the 18 state-of-the-art stringsto make the 17-minute underground journey from New Switzerland to the New Railway Station.
“Eto emblematic project for the city for the Thessaloniki is completed. Next Saturday, on 30/11, we deliver to society a state-of-the-art metro, with 13 stations 9.6 km long that will serve on a daily basis approx. 250,000 of our compatriots and which will be transported quickly, safely and ecologically”, emphasized Mr. Staikouras and added that this project is of decisive importance and necessity for facilitating the daily life of the citizens and visitors of Thessaloniki. In fact, he clarified that combined with the 50% renewal of the OASTH fleet “the everyday life of the citizens of Thessaloniki is greatly improved».
Acknowledging that the construction of the main line of the Thessaloniki metro took a long time, Mr. Staikouras pointed out the many difficulties and obstacles that have existed, but also the archaeological finds that have been found and which “exceed 300,000”. Many of them, as he said, are already on display in various stations of the main line of the Thessaloniki metro and 700 of them in total at the station of Agia Sofia. Regarding the Venizelos Station, which is expected to be revealed probably on 29/11 in the afternoon, he underlined that “it will be a big surprise for everyone and regarding the connection of the ancients with the operation of the subway».
For her extension of the metro to Kalamariathe Minister of Infrastructure and Transport reiterated that its operation together with the five stations is scheduled until the end of 2025.
In discussions that took place in the train making the underground journey on the main line, it was pointed out that the inauguration of the main line of the Thessaloniki metro is expected on 30/11 early at noon by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Pylaia Station and immediately after it will be handed over for use by the passenger public and indeed free of charge for “a sufficient period of time”, as characteristically noted by Mr. Staikouras thus answering the journalists’ persistent questions.
According to him, until today his foreign counterparts from Germany, Cyprus and Slovakia have confirmed and will be “present” in Thessaloniki from Friday 29/11.
Together with the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Nikos Tahiao, the managing directors of Helliniko Metro SA, Nikos Koureta and the Thema joint venture, Carlo Bianco, as well as other executives, the journalists were also at the Metro Control Center Thessaloniki at the Pylaia Station, which is the “heart” and the “brain” of the project and is informed by the wires ten times a second, about their exact location.
