In the presence of Marios Iliopoulos and Dimitris Melissanidis, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew celebrated the opening of the church doors in memory of Michalis Katsouris
Bartholomew’s historic visit to New Philadelphia took place in an emotionally charged atmosphere.
In the presence of a large number of people who gathered in the area and with the chant “Mihalis zeis ya panta AEKtzis” vibrating the atmosphere after the ceremony, the Ecumenical Patriarch celebrated the opening of the doors in the temple in memory of Michalis Katsouris.
With Marios Iliopoulos and Dimitris Melissanidis giving the “present”, Giorgos Kosmas-Evangelos Aslanidis on behalf of PAE AEK, the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yannis Vroutsis representing the government and Archbishop Hieronymos the Church of Greece, the Patriarch sent his message.
Expressing his support for the family of the deceased fan, he specifically stated in his speech:
“Mihalis, a pure and honest young man, paid with his life for his passion for our beloved AEK and sports. Experience the savagery and murderous instincts of humans. Michalis was a victim of blind violence that we condemn with indignation. The murder of Michalis is a grave sin.
The church urges young people to pursue sports. The sportsman elevates the spirit but is destroyed by the poison of fanaticism. The church is dedicated to the memory of Michael, we offer our condolences to his parents and mother. Let Michalis be the last victim of fan violence.”
