In the rhythm of the inauguration of the Thessaloniki – I L. Metro. Mendoni guides K. Sakellaropoulou and K. Mitsotakis in the antiquities of the project
Thessaloniki is moving to the rhythm of the inauguration of the Metro. The unveiling of the emblematic “Venizelos” station was completed on Friday afternoon.
The first visitors were the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whom the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni gave a tour of the archaeological site and the findings of the excavations.
At Venizelos station, visitors and passengers will be able to see up close the unique archaeological findings and “travel” to the commercial center of the city as it was in Roman and Byzantine times.
Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressing their admiration for the archaeological site and the archaeological finds at Venizelos station, after completing their tour. “It’s incredible,” exclaimed Ms. Sakellaropoulou, “you did something unique”, said Mr. Mitsotakis, while both gave warm congratulations to those who worked and cooperated to produce this unique result.
After the ceremony, Kyriakos Mitostakis said:
“Venizelos Station highlights all the cultural wealth of Thessaloniki. I believe that the people of Thessalonica tomorrow, when they have the opportunity to see this station, will recognize this huge effort, made by all services so that the city can have both ancient and metro.
I want to take this opportunity, especially today, to thank the services of the Ministry of Culture, from the minister personally to the last one, the last archaeologist, who carried out this unique in world time project of restoring and relocating the ancients here at Venizelos Station and I am happy because I see the neighborhood smiling.
I know how much the neighborhood and the whole city suffered from the history of the metro, but today we look ahead and from tomorrow this unique technical project is handed over to the citizens of Thessaloniki, a project that I am sure will change the whole face of the city” .
