The Russian military announced today that its air force is bombing “extremist groups” in Syria in support of government forces, Russian news agencies reported.

Jihadists and their allies swept into Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city, early this morning after a two-day lightning offensive against the Damascus regime, ending several years of relative calm in northwest Syria.

“The Russian Air Force is carrying out strikes against the equipment and men of illegal armed groups, against terrorist positions, supplies and artillery,” a Defense Ministry spokesman was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

According to the spokesman, 200 militants were “killed” in the last 24 hours.

AFP is unable to verify this information.

“The operation to repel the attack of the extremists continues,” said Oleg Ignasyuk, deputy head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s “Reconciliation Center” for Syria.

Russia is the main military backer of Bashar al-Assad, whom it has helped since 2015 turn the tide in the Syrian civil war.
