The first olive oil of the municipality of Thessaloniki has already been put into tins, which according to the chemical analysis test report of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is characterized as “extra virgin olive oil”.

The idea for the production of municipal olive oil came from the images of olive trees laden with fruit scattered throughout the city. The management of Prasinou decided for the first time to proceed with the olive harvest and try to extract olive oil, so that it can be used for social purposes.

During the harvest, approximately 1,100 kilos of olives were collected from the trees planted on the beach front, on Angelaki Street, in the town hall, in the Vlatadon Monastery, in the Rotunda, in the universities, in Triandria and in the Depot. They were immediately taken to the “Afoi Leberou” olive mill in Epanomi, which offered the municipality the process for free, and finally 175 liters of oil were produced.

At the same time, the necessary analyzes were carried out by the AUTH, by the Department of Food Science and Technology, according to which the particular oil with an acidity of 0.80 is characterized as beyond “extra virgin” and organic since no spraying of any kind has been carried out.

“As a result, we see that our first action went very well. Of course it will be repeated next year. A first registration was made of the olive trees of the municipality of Thessaloniki, which in the coming months will be pruned so that in the new year they will bear even more fruit”, the appointed municipal councilor of the municipality of Thessaloniki, responsible for green issues, Vassilis Diamantakis, told the Athenian/Macedonian News Agency. .

According to Mr. Diamantakis, during this time they are wanted “godparents» and suggestions for both the name of the oil and the label of the bottle. The goal is to give a name to the olive oil and to design a label that will combine the product with the city of Thessaloniki, so that once the dregs “sit” in the cans, the oil to enter as well bottles.
