Staikouras: “We are taking an important and essential first step in dealing with the perennial problems of the Greek railway”.
With 157 votes in favor, against 133 against and one present, the draft law of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport entitled “Restructuring of the railway sector and strengthening of transport regulatory agencies” was voted in principle by the plenary session.
With 157 votes in favor, against 135 against and two abstentions, a ministerial amendment was passed (no. 298/item 5) which, among other things, includes provisions that provide for subsidies to DEYA for electricity debts, if they are merged into EYDAP or DEYATH.
The two roll call votes were held following a request submitted by the KKE. A total of 291 MPs voted in the roll-call vote on the principle of the bill, while a total of 294 MPs voted in the roll-call vote for the amendment.
With an increased majority, an amendment was voted (no. 299/item 6) with the measures for banks, the granting of the risk allowance to the officers of the armed forces and the security forces, as well as the free provision of medicines to low pensioners. ND, PASOK-KINAL, SYRIZA, Hellenic Solution, Niki and Spartans voted in favor of the amendment. KKE, New Left and Pleussi Eleftherias voted in attendance.
A third ministerial amendment (no. 300/item 7) that provides for various suspensions and extensions of obligations and deadlines was voted by the ND. PASOK-KINAL, SYRIZA, KKE, Hellenic Solution, New Left Victory and Spartans voted against. Freedom Sailing was present and voted.
The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, closing the debate, emphasized that “we are taking an important and essential first step in dealing with the perennial problems of the Greek railway. It concerns the first of the five pillars of the action plan drawn up together with the European Commission and has timetables, resources and milestones.
The country, added the minister, “for the first time has a comprehensive action plan created in April and May 2024”. The recruitments, which the opposition deserved, added Mr. Staikouras, “they are not enough by themselves to deal with (…) the perennial problems of the railway. Substantial, persistent effort is required. We continue with seriousness, methodicality, persistence and steady steps. The governing majority has shown that it acts responsibly and has real empathy.”
