by

To date, about 60 burnt vehicles and trucks have been removed from the fourth garage of the passenger car ferry “Euroferry Olympia”, which is moored in the port of Astakos, to date, the shipwreck crews have proceeded. It is noted that the fire on the ship that broke out in the early hours of Friday 18/2, has now been extinguished, however intense and dangerous fumes are still inside the ship and the entire operation to remove the vehicles is done only with oxygen cylinders and special masks.

At the same time, the search for the two missing persons continues. From the fire that broke out on the ship, 9 people have lost their lives so far while 281 have been rescued.

According to information, in the next stage the shipwreck crews are expected to remove the vehicles from the second garage of the ship – a business that according to estimates is expected to last about two days – and then will follow an operation for the third garage.

Once the relevant process is completed, the approximately 700 tons of fuel that are in the ship’s tanks will be immediately pumped out in order not to disturb its stability for the completion of the operation.

All vehicles and trucks that are removed are initially transported to a specific waste packaging facility and are thoroughly inspected by officials of the Fire Service and a special expert appointed by the Corfu and Messolonghi prosecutor’s office.

It is noted that the ship had caught fire for an unknown reason on the third deck in the early hours of Friday 18/2 in the sea area northeast of Ereikousa during the execution of its planned route from Igoumenitsa to Brindisi.

The ship was transported by tugs to the port of Astakos for security reasons but also for the facilitation of the extinguishing operation.
