The first complainant from the three-member Court of Criminal Appeal launched a heavy accusation about the care of her father in the nursing home
“He was tied around the waist and his arms were marked around the perimeter like bruisesĀ». With these words, she described the image of her father, after a few days of his accommodation in the Chania Nursing Home, the first complainant who stepped up today to the three-member Court of Criminal Appeals in the trial of the 6 defendants, who are charged with the action of a criminal organization for 32 deaths of elderly people.
The lawyer Maria Papadaki, who represents families of victims and is herself a relative of a victim, testified that the Unit officials were indifferent to the state of health of her father, who suffered a respiratory infection as a result of which he was admitted to hospital and eventually lost his life. his life after several days of hospitalization.
According to the witness, in June 2020 her family decided to host her father, who was suffering from dementia, for a few days in the nursing home until they could find a home caregiver. She also described that one day after admission, although she asked to see him, the owner of the Unit did not let her see him, telling her that he was sleeping.
“A day later, I went again. They took him down to the entrance and I saw him behind the glass, because then there were covid measures. My father had nothing to do with when I had left him. He was in a wheelchair, had little contact with the environment. His eyes were shining, he couldn’t speak,” said Mrs. Papadakis, who emphasized that when she managed to see him up close, she found that he was tied from the waist and that “on his arms he had marks around the perimeter like bruises. I understood that he had been tied with both hands to some fixed pointĀ». Despite this image, as the witness pointed out, the owner of the Unit tried to convince her that her father was fine.
“I told her that I want to take him to the hospital, because otherwise you pick him up and I find him. The landlady insisted she didn’t need to. He told me that he is fever free, without any medical indications and that he does not have any problem. But I insisted that I’m not leaving unless we go to the hospital. So she called the ambulance and also wrote a referral, that he has a fever of 36.1, 97 oxygen, and that he was referred due to a payment reported by the relatives.. As soon as the ambulance came, they immediately took his temperature and told me that he was burning with fever. The oximeter showed very low saturation, at 85, he could barely breathe. When we got to the hospital emergency, the doctors said to me “now you brought him to us? Your father is dying! He was diagnosed with a respiratory infection. PneumoniaĀ».
At the beginning of her testimony, the lawyer emphasized that she chose this Nursing Home by searching the internet because they mentioned on their website about a unit of international standards with doctors and staff specialized in the elderly. The deposition will continue tomorrow.
It should be noted that the trial is being held in Athens by decision of the Supreme Court.
