A 47-year-old Bulgarian was arrested at the Promachona border station, last night, Tuesday, January 7, following methodical actions by the Ioannina Crime Investigation and Prosecution Sub-Directorate, who is accused of gang and subsequent fraud.
The arrested person, who according to a police announcement had the role of “collector” in tphone scamsin the previous days he extorted 16,200 euros from two elderly people in Ioannina under the pretext that their relatives are being held for causing serious injury in a traffic accident.
As emerged from the police investigation, the foreigner acted as a member of a gang, which had been organized for the purpose of systematically committing telephone fraud.
In particular, members of the gang made surprise phone calls, mainly to elderly people, pretending to be police officers and demanding large sums of money so that a close relative would not be prosecuted, due to allegedly injuring a person in a traffic accident that he had caused, while the money would then be received by from their house the arrested.
In this way, the gang managed to deceive on January 5 and 7 an 84-year-old woman and an 81-year-old man, from whom they extracted a total of 16,200 euros.
The Directorate of Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes of Ioannina managed to identify the car used by the perpetrator and he was finally spotted driving it, yesterday afternoon in Promahona Serres, by police officers of the Sidirokastro Police Department, during his attempt to leave Greece through the Greek-Bulgarian border.
The 47-year-old was brought to the Sub-Directorate for Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes of Ioannina, where he was recognized by the victims and arrested, while a total of 10,300 euros were found in his possession and in the glove compartment of the car, which was confiscated.
The arrested person will be taken to the Primary Prosecutor’s Office of Ioannina, while the investigation of the Sub-Directorate of Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes of Ioannina to discover the identity of his accomplices and their possible involvement in similar cases continues.
