The production of coal -burning electricity in Australia fell to the lowest level recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024, with this fuel being contributes less than 50% of national power production At this time, the competent supervisory body announced today.

Increasing electricity with photovoltaic frames has allowed the share of carbon burning production below 50% of its total from October to December 2024, AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator, corresponding to DEDDIE) explained to Press release published.

At the same time, the production of electricity with photovoltaic frames installed on building ceilings increased to 18% from special installations (“farms”) by 9% in the fourth quarter, reaching record levels.

During this period, renewable energy reached 46% of Australia’s energy mixture, reaching the climax on November 7, 2024, when Renewable Sources share in the mixture reached 75.6%.

Australia, a country that is one of the greatest carbon exporteris committed to succeed climate neutrality, drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions, by 2050.

The country remains, however, among the main carbon and gas exporters in the world and largely depends on fossil fuels for electricity production.

On a global scale, about one -third of the electricity consumed by humanity is produced by carbon burning, according to International Energy Organization (ILO). The demand for this mineral fuel, which contributes to climate change, broke a record in 2022.

Based on the ILO calculations, in order to reduce CO2 emissions to the middle of the century, all carbon burning -free electricity would have to be stopped without committing carbon dioxide by 2040.
