Preventive measures and schools are extended in Thira, Ios, Anafi and Amorgos will remain closed until Friday 21 February 2025
A relative recession is the seismic sequence in the marine area of Anhydros between Thira and Amorgos, with about 1,300 earthquakes from February 1 to today with a size of over 3.0 (and with a maximum recorded size M 5.3).
This was found among other things the members of the two committees (of the Permanent Scientific Committee of Seismic Risk Assessment and Reduction of the Seismic Risk and the Standing Scientific Committee for Monitoring of the Greek Volcanic Arc Book of OASP) that met today. At the same time, they point out that the current seismic activity in the island of Anhydros is due to submarine faults with a Ba-ND direction and is part of the wider geodynamic framework of the area. According to available data, this activity is due to a combination of tectonic and deeper masculinity. They also add that seismic activity within the caldera remains at the same levels, while increased soil deformation is observed in the wider area of Santorini and emphasize that public buildings have shown very good behavior in seismic charges.
Finally, as highlights schools in Thira, Ios, Anafi and Amorgos, they will remain closed until Friday, February 21, 2025.
The committees will meet again on Wednesday February 21, 2025 at 18:00.
Following is the full announcement by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection after the completion of the two committees’ meeting:
This morning the president of OASP, professor Efthymios Lekkas again convened a joint meeting of the two committees (of the permanent Scientific Committee for Establishment of Seismic Risk and Reduction of the Seismic Risk and the Standing Scientific Committee for Monitoring of the Hellenic Volcano Archive of the OASP).
The meeting was held at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in the presence of Minister Vassilis Kikilia, Deputy Minister Evangelos Tournas of the Secretary General of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou, Secretary General of the Rehabilitation DIFTHA) by Lieutenant General Michael Klouva as well as representatives of the leadership of the Fire Brigade.
After discussion between committees and the presentation and examination of all data so far, the following are unanimously formulated:
- The seismic sequence in the marine area of Anhydros between Thira and Amorgos has a relative recession, with about 1,300 earthquakes from February 1 to today with a size of more than 3.0 (and with a maximum recorded size M 5.3).
- The current earthquake activity in the area of the island of Anhydros is due to submarine faults with a Ba-ND address and is part of the wider geodynamic framework of the area. According to available data, this activity is due to a combination of tectonic and deeper masculinity.
- The seismic activity within the cobblestone remains at the same level, while an increased territorial deformation is observed in the wider area of Santorini.
- Public buildings, based on checks so far, have shown very good behavior in seismic loads.
- Committees remind the following precautionary measures:
Citizens should:
- Avoid large gatherings within buildings.
- To avoid approach to abandoned buildings.
- Avoid access and stay in the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfos and Paleo Port of Fira.
- To lift the dangerous elements of non -structural vulnerability in their buildings (heavy honest objects, suspended ceilings, etc.) and in the emptying of the waters in the swimming tanks (pools).
- Choose safe routes when moving to urban fabric and provincial road network, especially in places where there are intense morphological slopes and are likely to develop landslide phenomena.
- Immediate removal from coastal areas in the event of a strong seismic vibration.
- Schools should remain closed until Friday, February 21, 2025 in Thira, Ios, Anafi and Amorgos.
The committees will meet again on Wednesday, February 21, 2025 at 18:00. In terms of informing citizens on anti -seismic protection, more information can be sought on the websites of the Anti -Seismic Planning and Protection Organization (www.oasp.gr) and the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr) .
