Eliana Malichin is a young winemaker who operates in Melabes of Rethymnon and decided to invest in an old variety of grapes.

As he tells the show “Where there is Greece”, he studied Agriculture, did a master’s degree in Oenology and in 2019 found in the area he decided to do the winery, as the natural wealth of this point enchanted it.

Within a few years, it has managed to revive the “Vidiano”, a self -rapine variety of vineyards, to organize local growers and make them turn to the biological viticulture.

He managed to regenerate the damaged vineyards in Melabes after the great fire of 2022 and personally fight for the design of a standard fire protection system in the vineyards of the area.

It is no coincidence that NASA chose Melabes as one of the 3 most fire -stricken areas in Greece and studied it for the way it recovered after every fire to biological, agronomic, economic and social level, going to the area a few months before it burns.

“Cultivation is trying to be closer to nature,” she says, explaining what is “regenerative cultivation”.

It also motivates other young people to return to their places, as the winery says, it offers good income.

Initially from 5 producers it managed to increase them to 40 from different parts and not just the Melabes.

The “black” spot are the fires of 2022 that destroyed 21,000 acres in the area. “At first we thought we were destroyed, but after the vineyard it began to regenerate on its own. It was like telling us don’t give up, “says Eliana Malizin
