Costas and ocean Commissioner Costas Kadis today inaugurated the first dialogue on fisheries and oceans, which is a crucial step in shaping the European Oceans. The high -level round table discussion brought in contact with a wide range of policy -making bodies, interested parties and experts, who discussed the future of ocean governance in the European Union (EU).

The meeting, organized by Commissioner Kadi, has gathered important personalities, including ministers who have taken over the portfolio from the countries that will have the next EU Council presidents and France (which will host the conference of their United Nations for the June Oceans), by Carmen Crespo Díaz, its president Pech Commission of the European Parliament, Thomas Bajada, Vice -President of the European Parliament’s Searica Inter -Section Team, former Maria Damanakis and Karmenos Vela Commissioners, as well as representatives of advisory councils, NGOs, reflection groups, the relevant industry and the scientific community.

The people who participated in the dialogue discussed the pressing issues facing the EU ocean governance model, as well as the challenges to be addressed and the priorities to be set. The subject of the debate were also measures to protect biodiversity and promote ocean ecosystem management, as well as opportunities for sustainable development and jobs in the blue EU economy. Dialogue also focused on supporting the resilience and viability of the coastal communities and cities in the various marine basins of the EU. The Discussions will form the basis for the development of the European Pact for the Oceans, a key initiative to strengthen cohesion between the various areas of policy related to the oceans.

Dialogues on fisheries and oceans will continue with the “European Oceans”, an event in Brussels on March 5th.

This is an important step in progress in shaping the European Pact for the oceans, which will be crucial to ocean governance.
