Zafiro Karasavva is the mother of Yiannis Karasavva who was charred. This is the first time she has been talking publicly. Survivors and relatives of victims talk to DW
The meeting with the Mrs. Karasavva She was in her home in a suburb of Thessaloniki. She lost her monk, John, who was probably in wagon 3 or in the canteen when the accident happened. Today it only calls for justification. This is the first time he decided to speak publicly.
I am called Zafiro Karasavva and I lost my son John Karasavva, 28 years old. He went to PAMAK (University of Macedonia), but he was not satisfied with the IT studies he had begun and decided that he would like to pursue psychology. So he started studying at a school in Athens. He liked it very much. He was excited. I think it would be very good at what he had chosen. We loved him very much. We have tried for 15 years to have a child and finally in 1995 John was born. With my husband all these years we have tried to raise him with principles, with values.
Doing a report two years after the accident, how would you describe these two years?
Witness, I would say. Losing your child there is nothing left. No joy anymore. And I am full of anger, anger for all that is happening, for all these offensive comments that are often heard from different sides.
These days we are constantly seeing that the issue has taken a great extent. It has become the first political issue in Greece. How do you seem to you?
So shouldn’t it be? There are 57 people lost and so many who were injured. And why? Why wasn’t a lantern worked? Why was there no telecommunications? Why weren’t there the necessary ones, while our ministers assured us that the railway was safe? The safest instrument was told to be. And that’s why John chose. He went to the station, left the car and took the train.
There is a lot of talk of concealment. Do you believe this?
Yes, at all levels. From the same night I can say. Before they even got the dead, the burnt bodies, they began to unravel. Is this ever to happen? I read that in Germany, because they killed two people a young girl, they placed power wires so that no one would get into the crime. Here was a disaster with so many people and unraveled straight away. They tried to conceal everything. Isn’t this a crime? The Fire Brigade also delayed too much to go and offer help. And something else. We heard the prime minister say that he had not been informed of the flammable materials and the boom. If so, Mr. Mitsotakis, you are incompetent and unworthy of the position you hold. Unless you lie. You also said that only parents have the right to speak, but the answers we get are not honest.
Have you had state support, psychological, economic, or otherwise?
This pension they have given and that we did not want at all. Anyway, we just have it right. We are trying to spend this money to little kids and anything we can do good to other people, because getting a pension for your child is very heavy. As for psychological support, they got us in the first few days from a psychological support center, but nothing else.
Right now how is your daily routine? How do you manage it?
I can’t manage it. I’m just trying to do more things than I can, so as not to think. I try to do work. I went to a psychologist, I followed a treatment for some time, but after stopping it, because I couldn’t express my feelings.
There is a great deal of support of the world, there are thousands of people who take to the streets. Thank you this?
Yes, I am very pleased with what is happening. It gives us courage that this will reveal the truth.
Do you have contacts with other relatives of victims and survivors?
Mostly with two families and it helps us a lot when talking to each other.
What do you expect now? What do you hope for? What do you want?
Justification. Some should finally pay for the crime that happened. Someone has to be punished.
Finally, would you like to add something more that I didn’t ask you?
I would like justice to stand up and learn the truth. Now John is gone and our hug is empty, let our home let go.
