The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy participated in the UN Security Council meeting
The High Representative of European Union on foreign affairs and security policy issues, Kaya He participated in the UN Security Council meeting that convened to discuss the cooperation between the United Nations and Regional EU organizations.
The discussion focused on strengthening cooperation between UN and the EU in the maintenance of international peace and security, with the High Representative highlighting the EU’s contribution to several UN initiatives, including crisis management, peacekeeping and humanitarian aid.
The UN and the EU reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and to cooperate to promote world stability and prosperity.
The EU has also pledged to remain a “credible UN partner” in critical areas, such as international law, peace and security, multilateral dialogue, humanitarian aid and funding.
“You can rely on the EU as the most reliable and trusted UN partner,” he said, speaking to UN Security Council member states.
Mrs Callas underlined the unprecedented pressure facing the UN on its 80th anniversary, with “blatant violations of the UN Charter” and in “replacing the rule of law with the law of validity”.
For Ukraine
Mrs Calas said the EU had strongly condemned Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, describing the “illegal war of aggression”. It confirmed the EU’s support for the “right of Ukraine to self -defense in accordance with the map” and the need for a “fair and lasting peace” on the basis of international law.
He recalled that “the war can end immediately if Russia withdraws its troops”, accusing Moscow of “continuing to bomb and distort reality.”
“The Ukrainians do not want to be part of Russia. They have fought against him for three years. They deserve to choose their own future. And we must all support them, ”he said.
In addition, he warned of the “Russian alliance with North Korea and Iran”, describing the transfer of weapons and ballistic missiles “a serious violation of international law” and a “great threat to global security”.
For Gaza
For the conflict in Gaza, Mrs Calas said that “a ceasefire is maintained, but remains fragile”, and called for “unobstructed humanitarian aid”.
The EU remains “the largest humanitarian aid provider to the Palestinian people,” he said, noting that it has allocated “1.5 billion euros in the last two years”.
Mrs Callas confirmed the EU’s commitment to the solution of the two states, rejecting any “demographic or territorial changes” and supporting a “political solution” that will ensure both Israeli and Palestinian security.
“Let me also say that the European Union strongly rejects every effort of demographic or territorial changes. In Gaza. To other parts of the world. Anywhere. According to the UN Charter and International Law. At the same time, Israel’s security is of the utmost importance for a constant political solution, ”he said.
Ms Calas described the Arabic plan of recovery and reconstruction of Gaza presented at the Cairo Summit and was also adopted by the Islamic Cooperation Organization as a “serious proposal for the future of Gaza”.
For Syria
The EU supports a peaceful and inclusive transition and supports the agreement between the Syrian democratic forces and Damascus, considering the “step towards stability”, Ms Calas said.
To support Syria, the EU announced the suspension of “certain restrictive measures, but warned that it would restore it if there was a deterioration”.
“We welcome the key developments in the right direction of a transition without exclusion with the agreement announced yesterday between the Syrian democratic forces and Damascus, which could pave the way for more stability and a better future for many Syrians.
In order to help relieve the suffering socio -economic situation in Syria, the EU has suspended some restrictive measures, “he said.
For Africa
Mrs Callas emphasized the importance of territorial integrity in Africa, pointing out the crises in the People’s Republic of Congo and Sudan.
He welcomed the new AUSSOM support and stabilization mission and called for “stronger regional and international pressure” to prevent further conflict.
It reiterated the EU’s commitment to global security, having 3m euros annually to the UN Peace Fund and funding more than 20% of the UN Peace Enterprises budget.
Mr Callas made special reference to businesses aspides, Atalanta, and Irini, which “enhance sea security, fighting and imposing weapons embargo”.
Greece: UN map is a pillar of peace, security and development
In his position on the UN Security Council on co -operation between the UN and the EU Regional Organizations, the Greek permanent representative to the UN Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris emphasized the importance of multimedia in the face of global crisis. He emphasized that “no country can deal with today’s crises on its own”, reiterating that the UN map is a pillar of peace, security and growth.
Mr Sekeris highlighted the crucial role of the European Union, noting that its commitment is “both political and economic”. The EU, he said, actively supports UN Security Council orders in crisis management, peacekeeping and humanitarian aid, with a special presence in the Western Balkans via the Eufor Althea mission. In addition, UN-EU cooperation, he stressed, boosts maritime security, as shown in Eunavfor Aspides, Irini and Atalanta.
Concerning Eunavfor Med Irini, who applies the UN weapons embargo on Libya, Mr Sekeris stressed his contribution “to the maintenance of international peace and security”, while stressing that Greece actively supports the mission by naval and air means.
Referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he expressed Greece’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the states, stating that “the time of peace has come”. However, he stressed that peace must be “fair, total and lasting”, and can only be achieved through comprehensive diplomacy and international law. In any case, “Europe must be at the negotiating table,” he said.
Concerning Gaza, Greece is compiling the EU in support of a “ceasefire” support, supporting both humanitarian aid and hostage liberation. Mr Sekeris emphasized the need for “unhindered and immediate flow of help in the Gaza Strip”, while underlining the EU’s crucial role in “planning for post -war governance, security and reconstruction”.
As for Africa, Mr Sekeris emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation, citing crises in Sudan and Congo, where conflicts have caused massive population movements and serious human rights violations. He even asked the Security Council to ensure that the peace missions would be “adequately equipped” and adapted to the political data of the area.
In closing, the Greek permanent representative currently described it as “decisive” for the international system, calling for collective action to maintain international law and defending multimedia. He confirmed that “the EU remains unshakable in its commitment to work with the UN for a world of peace, security and human dignity”.
