“I am 86 years old and I had never seen such a situation again,” says one producer, noting that there are damage to raisins, vines, olive groves
Their wounds are measured by producers in Kryoneri and Bartholomew, in Western Greece As the fierce hailstorm caused serious damage in crops.
The lens of the “Patris” newspaper was in the community and recorded the agony of the farmers, who conveyed how they experienced the strong phenomenon and the damage it caused to their crops, pointing out that their whole year was lost and they would have to do so.
Particular reference was made to the size of the quartz that fell into their area, which according to testimonies were twice as high as a hazelnut, and the image they showed was shocking, since in many cases the flowers had fallen to the ground, and the leaves were filled.
The feeling of frustration has overwhelmed farmers in the area, with older people pointing out that a similar phenomenon have not seen all these years before and how should the state help the producerssince the largest portion of producers deal with the olives that have suffered and the greatest damage not covered by ELGA.
THE Kostas AnagnostopoulosDeputy Mayor of Ilida states: “After 4 in the afternoon, the community hit strong hailstorms and with severe extreme weather. As a result, due to the volume of hailstorming and its duration, community crops and many fruit trees were large. There is a decline in flowers and leaves from the trees, which means that it will bring a great decline in area farmers. Due to the good weather conditions that have existed so far, there have been all the parameters to acclimatize the trees and have good production. Farmers are now in despair and expect ELGA to come to make estimates and make the statements immediately to be compensated. My communication with ELGA yesterday and today was frequent and I was assured that they would come to the area immediately to appreciate the damage. ”
Respectively, the Kostas PapaleonidasPresident of the PC Kryoneri notes: “About four at all began the hailstorm, without the first rainfall. The hail was thick and lasted for a long time, so it was paved to such an extent that it was like snowfall. Green in the area had given its place in white. After about 20 hours, in many places there is still coarse hail that has not melted, a sample of how strong the phenomenon was. As a result, it is almost completely destroyed by the olives, and there are some areas of raisins that have been damaged. I talked to ELGA and I was told that the damage to the olives are not covered. And as if that weren’t enough, I was told that they need to sprinkle so that their trees would not be damaged. The phenomenon reached up to one kilometer around the center of the village. It was as if God found it and sent us the hail. 90% are olive growers and unfortunately they have suffered a complete disaster. I think the state should act outside the legal framework after happening in a specific area, reinforcing people who will not have to get out in the winter and live difficult. “
A producer, Dimitrios Vassilopoulos says: “I am 86 years old and such a situation I had never seen again. The evil that found us yesterday did great damage to raisins, vines, olive groves. All flowers and fruit have fallen to the ground. From the olives we have been living all these years and everything has been destroyed. “
