“Now it is certain, Mariupol is no more” “Mariupol no longer exists,” says the Consul General in the city Manolis Androulakis in a shocking post on Facebook.
The post of Mr. Androulakis:
“When I saw the buildings of Mariupol burning and collapsing, I said that they would rebuild them in the future. When I saw the sunken ships in the harbor, I thought that they would be lifted at some point, and new ones would be able to sail in the Azov and Black Seas. But when I saw yesterday the brutal and “ugly” industrial plant Azovstal disintegrate, something else caught me. This factory, like the port, was the life of the city. It was the workplace of about 40,000 workers – some would say from the working class – and has been operating continuously since the 1930s. A few years ago, investments of 6 billion were announced for extensions and environmental improvements. As in all of Mariupol, the new capital of the Oblast (county), the money that fell was too much.
»Now it is certain, Mariupol is no more. I hope that the authentic decree of Catherine, in Russian and Greek, which was in the museum of the city, and which determined the relocation of the Greeks of the Crimea to the area, has been saved. “Even to remind us that there was once a city.”
Anxiety is running high in the meantime for civilians believed to remain under the rubble of the devastated Mariupol theater as rescuers are prevented from approaching due to Russian bombing. The Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Verestschuk stated today that at least 100,000 civilians they want to leave Mariupol.
The theater was attacked by Russians bombs last week, with hundreds of civilians – including children – taking refuge.
