Times: Ukrainians are running out of weapons

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

A Times article reports that Ukrainians “Run out of weapons” in the battle to defend their homeland against the Russian invader.

The London newspaper cites Paul Grodt, head of a non-governmental organization representing the Ukrainian diaspora. Mr Grodd said he had met with Foreign Minister Dmitry Kouleba in Lviv on March 15, where he had told him “we have two more weeks” before the end of armaments.

“This basically means that there is now a week left until their anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons are exhausted. He was very diplomatic. “The reality is that Ukraine is running out of the necessary defense systems to be able to defend itself properly,” Grod said.

He adds that the Stinger and Javelin anti-tank missiles supplied by Ukraine from the West and that promises of armaments from Germany and France have not yet been fulfilled.

Western officials have noted that the Ukrainians are “obviously spending a lot of ammunition” more than expected due to stronger-than-expected resistance.

The Times reports that according to information, Ukrainian President Zelensky raised concerns in a conversation with British Prime Minister Johnson at the weekend, saying that some countries have not actually fulfilled their arms commitments.

A few days ago, in his speech at the conference of the countries of the United Expeditionary Force in London, President Zelensky had said that the ammunition that his country receives from the West in a week is exhausted within 20 hours.

According to Mr. Grod, the Russians are “aggressively” hitting the Ukrainian supply lines and therefore his Ukrainian compatriots need more weapons “now”.

However, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that in the intervening period between the Kuleba-Grond meeting, the situation regarding military supplies “has partially improved”.

He added: “Some countries have stepped up their military support to Ukraine, including strengthening their air and anti-aircraft defenses. However, it is crucial that our partners continue to regularly supply weapons and ammunition. “

A Western Times source dismissed the arms embargo, saying there were persistent shortages, but no indication that the Ukrainians were running out or that the West would let them run.

However, Boris Johnson is expected to stress at the NATO summit on Thursday that there is an urgent need to increase the flow of weapons to the Ukrainians.
