The second phase of closing camps was completed as part of the reorganization of the Armed Forces and their new structure. This phase includes mergers and metastases of 21 points on the mainland and the islands, reportedly.

Specifically, these are:

  • 8 points in Macedonia
  • 2 in Thrace
  • 2 in Thessaly
  • 2 In Central Greece
  • 3 in the Peloponnese
  • 4 in northern, southern and east Aegean

Cumulatively, since the end of 2024 when the “unlawful” process began in the Greek army, 31 points have been abolished. The design stipulates that during Phase C and D, which will be the most sweeping and expected to be completed in 2025, 106 points will be abolished.

Better management of the staffing potential

By 2024, 831 camps were operating throughout the country, more than the United States of America has. After completing the three phases, they are expected to be reduced to 694.

Reportedly, the 21st camps were selected following relevant recommendations by the Army General Staff and includes units that were inactive, under -staffed or negligible operational importance, with their operating costs greater than any strategic benefit.

As far as the border is concerned, that is, the 6 points of Thrace and the Aegean islands, it was decided to merger the National Guard units to increase the staffing in critical formations where there is more need and for better management of the staff.

Competent sources make it clear that the power is in no way removing, nor is the militant capacity of the National Guard’s battalions serving in the border. On the contrary, they note that these actions allow better use.

Resource savings

According to the structure of forces 2024-2035, the closure of 137 camps will save about 1.7 billion euros in a decade. According to recent statements by the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendia, the abolition, merger and movement of the 10 Phase First Phase of the Program, save 130,316 labor -hours per month.

Along with the cuts in operating costs, the closure of units and the rationalization of the yearbook released significant funds from the defense budget, which are returned in the form of increases in the monthly earnings of the Armed Forces executives ranging from 13% to 20%.

In addition, saving resources has allowed the payment of hazard benefits and the increase in compensation paid to military school students. Increasing salaries as a whole in the army is the most critical bet to manage the political and military leadership of the Armed Forces, as the payroll is the key factor that leads to massive retirement but also to a dramatic reduction in the number of students’ students. A problem that has not yet shown its true size.

In addition, with the completion of the second phase, in addition to money, significant land is expected to be released, which will be used in the Armed Forces’ residential program. The goal, according to the leadership of the Greek Pentagon, is to build 5,000 houses by 2030, which will be granted to executives who are shifted away from their place of residence. During the first phase of the closure of camps, more than 3,500 acres were released, part of which has already been included in the residential program of the Ministry of National Defense.
