The investigation of the police of the Heraklion Police Department led to the investigation cases of fraud with women victims in various parts of Greece.

A case has been opened against two local women, aged 67 and 48, and three foreign men, from Nigeria and Turkey, aged 21 and 44, for the offenses of forming a gang and fraud.

According to the investigation, the aforementioned, together with at least one other unknown accomplice and acting since at least April 2020, had set up a criminal group with distinct roles, with the aim of deceiving women and gaining illicit financial gain.

In terms of their methodology, their unknown accomplice initially approached women through social media applications, pretending to be an employee of the US Army or the United Nations (UN), who served in Asian countries (Syria, Afghanistan, etc.). .a.).

He then sought emotional connection with his potential victims and extorted money, using various tricks, such as:

• that he would send a parcel that allegedly contained money or valuables and that money would have to be paid for transport and customs clearance costs; or

• that he was allegedly arrested at an airport in an Asian country and asked for money to be paid as bail for his release; or

• that he would retire and come to settle permanently in Greece, asking to apply as a spouse for permission from the UN. paying various sums of money.

So far it has been ascertained that out of eight women in various areas of Greece they managed to extract the amount of 168,448 euros, while they tried to extract the amount of 29,000 euros.

The eight women are from Serres, Imathia, Pella, Achaia, Thessaloniki and Attica.

The amounts of money were paid by the victims to bank accounts of credit institutions in Greece and abroad, but also to money transfer companies.

The police investigation continues both for the identification of the details of their unknown accomplices, as well as for their possible participation in other similar criminal acts.

The criminal case against them was submitted to the Prosecutor of Serres.
