An Animal Protection Department is created in ELAS to deal with incidents of abuse

Animal protection department is created in the Greek Police for the better implementation of the law, according to the Presidential Decree issued.

The Presidential Decree was submitted by the Minister of Civil Protection Panagiotis Theodorikakos for the establishment of an Animal Protection Department in the Greek Police with the aim of contributing as much as possible to the reduction of the sad incidents of abuse and killing of animals observed in the country and satisfies a constant request of the animal welfare community.

The Presidential Decree also includes provisions that provide for the organization and operation of the Service of trainers and escorts of police dogs.

More specifically, the responsibilities of the Department of Animal Protection are the following:

a. Monitoring cases of neglect, active and passive abuse and killing animals,

b. Guidance, supervision and coordination of the Regional Services of the Hellenic Police, on the one hand, for the effective and efficient management of the aforementioned cases, and on the other hand, for the correct application of the current legal framework,

c. Preparation of legislative regulations and related administrative acts, planning of precautionary measures, elaboration of special business plans for their management and evaluation of their completeness, with their parallel adjustment, in a common case, in order to prevent externalization of these violations.

d. Preparation and processing of standardized – coded important reports related to crimes against animals for their proper treatment and the definition of a uniform way of recording the essential elements of the incidents, by the competent Services,

e. Collection, regular maintenance and further processing and utilization of statistics for each case of animal abuse, as well as data of reports – cases of criminal developments, of particular importance,

f. Study of prevention and repression measures, but also of scientific and technical methods applied at both European and international level, their elaboration and their possible utilization – integration in the applied strategy – management policy,

g. Proposing, elaboration and implementation of electronic programs (on line) or through life training and continuous training of staff handling cases of advanced character through seminars, workshops, etc., in collaboration with the Directorate of Education and Human Resources Development / A. E.A. or co-competent Bodies and Authorities at central and regional level,

h. Development of actions and initiatives for the information and sensitization of the citizens, on the way of dealing with these torts, but also for the protection of the animals, the strengthening of the cooperation with the Hellenic Police Services and the creation of a continuous and two-way network. communication with them, but also with the other co-competent Bodies,

i. Cooperation with all competent Authorities and Services, as well as other governmental and non-governmental bodies with the aim of, jointly, where required, action planning, exchange of know-how, implementation of best practices and

j. Representation of the Greek Police in events, at national, European and international level, on the issue of animal protection.
