This Ford Capri has a series of personalized design details that draw inspiration from both the brilliant career and the intense personality of Eric Cantona
Ford introduced a unique Capri, which ideally combines the flagship style and personality of the new, purely electric SUV with that of another legend – the player Eric Cantona.
The company worked with Cantona for the launch of the new Ford Capri and to celebrate its success, the legendary “King Eric” joined forces with Ford Design to create a unique – literally – Capri.
With a multitude of design details and unique features inspired by the prestige, style and humor of the former French international footballer, this special capri is a car that could only drive one human being.
Made with rigorous specifications and specially designed elements, this unique Capri was handed over to Eric Cantona as part of a special ceremony held at Ford France’s headquarters, in the presence of Louis-Carl Vignon President and its employees. The vehicle’s delivery event was also attended by Ford European External Design, Thomas Morel.
Creating a legend
Before the relevant work on the creation of the unique car, a select Ford Design team, in which Thomas Morel, responsible for Capri’s exterior design, met with Eric Cantona in order to exchange views and formulating the basic directions. The team developed various ideas, inspired not only by Eric Cantona’s football career, but also by its unconventional character and creative temperament.
Using the Capri RWD Extended Range as a “canvas”, the exterior surfaces of the vehicle are painted in the impressive Signal Orange color – a historic color of Ford used in the 1970s in many models, including the Capri Mark III.
Along both the side surfaces of this unique Ford Capri, there is a glossy black stripe ending in number 7 – the number wearing Eric Cantona was wearing in his jersey for five seasons when they competed in England. The overall image is completed by two glossy black stripes, which run through the body from the tip to the tail. The front wing is dominated by the signature of Eric Cantona and the Ford Design logo, also in glossy black color.
To ensure a flawless finish, the vehicle was completely stripped before its paint. The impressive stripes, the signature of the French, as well as the Ford design logo were covered and painted before applying transparent lacquer layers, with the aim of achieving a precise and glamorous result.
To highlight the sports credentials of both Eric Cantona and Ford Capri, the creators of the vehicle added a unique glossy spoiler to the back, also black, while the lower part of the front bumper and the “Capri” inscription on the upper part also acquired a corresponding finish. The 21 -inch aluminum wheels have a black finish and dark silver color on their outer lip.
Another discreet reference to Cantona’s legendary personality is found in the rear colum of the vehicle, where a three -dimensional crown -shaped emblem appears – a reference to the nickname of the Frenchman, “King Eric”.
With the characteristic touches on the exterior surfaces of this unique Ford Capri honoring Eric Cantona’s career as a footballer, the interior comes in turn to “photograph” his unruly character. Thus, on the center console, known as Megaconsole, a removable cover was created over the glass. A 3D printing product and with a glossy plexiglas finish, it contains the phrase of Eric Cantona he said in the preparation of Capri’s presentation: “When a goat follows her hero in his car, it is because the ruler of the track returns. The legend came back. ” The text is written in signal orange color and is highlighted by the cabin lighting.
The front headrests are also a humorous reference to one of the most famous moments of Eric Cantona in the stadiums – and specifically to the famous kung Fu kick – which is sewn on the fabric. The seats fee feeltek luxury grain with orange seams and double strips in signal orange, corresponding to those exterior surfaces. The specially designed mats have an outline of nubuck with orange seams, while the steering wheel has a new leather lining. Also, its vertical beam is painted in the color Orange.
A perfect combination
Being the ideal ambassador for the launch of the new Ford Capri, Eric Cantona appeared in a series of viral videos, posts on social media and media events – and so a legend revealed the return of another legend.
“The purely electric Capri exudes style and confidence – just like Eric on the pitch – so this was the perfect opportunity to create an extremely special version with its name,” said Amko Leenarts, Design Director, Ford Europe. “Capri overflows with a revolutionary spirit. That is why it fits perfectly with the “king”.
“True joy stems from the expression – either on the court, on the canvas, or on the stage,” said Eric Cantona. “This Capri reflects the many aspects of Cantona – deservedly worth the title of” Legend “.
