The ELAS Headquarters in a statement made it clear on publications referring to delays in appointment planning for the issuance of a new type of identity card.

In particular, the announcement highlights actions taken by ELAS to better serve citizens, such as abolishing the limitation of local competence and the implementation of an expanded working hours to 81 police stations, and it is noted that more than 1,760,000 new cards have been issued in the autumn of 2023.

“Regarding reports referring to delays in appointment planning for the issuance of a new type of identity card, the Hellenic Police Headquarters clarify the following:

The Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Greek Police are closely monitoring technological developments and are actively involved in the transition of public administration to the new digital age. In collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Governance, steps have been designed and implemented to improve citizen service, while ensuring the security and validity of the process.

The Id.gov.gr platform was a key step in this direction, giving citizens for the first time to plan electronic appointments, avoiding waiting and suffering. In addition, by a recent amendment to the relevant Joint Ministerial Decision, the restriction of local competence was abolished, enabling citizens to serve any identity office, regardless of their place of residence.

At the same time:

  • 81 Police Services in the large urban areas apply an extended opening hours throughout the week.
  • Special procedures have been provided for cases of loss or theft of an identity card, where upon request, extraordinary appointments can be planned.
  • It has begun redistribution of staff and a gradual increase in the number of appointments available, where possible.

The intense demand recorded is absolutely expected, as it is an unprecedented nationwide process of renewing identities, which has begun in the fall of 2023 and has already led to the issue of more than 1,760,000 new bulletins. It is a venture that is evolving smoothly and steadily, adapting to the growing needs of society.
