On May 19, tobacco layers were recorded at 10km above the island of Antikythera and later above Thessaloniki
Above Greece came tobacco from the Canadian forest fires raging in Manitoba province.
Tobacco layers of the big fires raging in Manitoba, Canada’s province since early May, have been observed in recent days in the upper atmosphere above the Eastern Mediterranean – and above Greece.
On May 19, at 2:00 in the morning, tobacco layers were recorded at 10 kilometers above the Geosciences and Climate Change Observatory (PGA) on the island of Antikythera. A few hours later, at 12:00, they were again found at 9 and 13 kilometers above Thessaloniki, from the Physics Lab of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).
“The fires in Manitoba have destroyed huge forests, releasing huge amounts of tobacco. At these heights, tobacco can travel thousands of kilometers in a few days!
Although it is too high to directly affect our health, smoke interacts with sunlight, which can affect the climate of the planet, “says the information hub on atmospheric composition in Greece, Atmohub.
Attached images are captured (Figure 1) tobacco layers (in the red frames), as recorded by the Lidar stations at the PGAA Observatory in Antikythera and the AUTH Atmospheric Laboratory in Thessaloniki.
In addition, pictures 2 and 3 show the tobacco backtrajectories and its possible source of origin, as calculated with the FlexPart model of the Noa – React team. The results, according to the announcement, confirm that the smoke comes from North America, and in particular the area of the big fires in Canada.
