This year’s “Earth Hour”, which is today, March 26, at 20:30, focuses on the crucial issue of sustainable nutrition, as food (preparation, offering) has always been an act of love and a gesture of solidarity.
At the same time, food is the strongest link between man and nature, as eating habits and choices have a direct impact on the environment as a whole.
Earth Hour, WWF’s largest global environmental campaign, is in its 15th year and is a unique opportunity for millions of people around the world to unite their voices and send a clear message: ” we want a sustainable future for all. We want a safe world, where every person will have equal opportunities to fulfill their dreams “.
According to a WWF announcement, the Earth is the one that provides everything man needs to survive, as food production requires valuable natural resources, such as land and water. The modern food model is depleting the planet, the announcement said, noting that the way food is produced today is the leading cause of biodiversity loss, and is responsible for about 25% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
Already, thousands of citizens in Greece have declared their participation in “Earth Hour”, while dozens of organizations have responded to the call of WWF Hellas to turn off the lights for an hour and send their own message for the protection of the environment.
In particular, this year, the Acropolis, the White Tower, the Municipality of Athens will participate in the initiative by turning off the lights at the City Hall and the Technopolis, the Municipality of Thessaloniki with the blackout of the city’s emblematic buildings, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Monemvasia, the Castle of Amfissa, the Municipality of Peristeri, as well as many more municipalities throughout the country.
In addition, for another year, the Greek Scout Corps and the Greek Guiding Corps will participate in the initiative. Finally, ERT contributes to the even greater dissemination of the message for the protection of nature this year, by actively participating in “Earth Hour”, by informing its public, its employees and the symbolic blackout of the facade of the Agia Paraskevi Radio House.
