Georgantas in SKAI: From Monday and within 48 hours the declaration of stocks – Full sufficiency in wheat

by

Most likely tomorrow will start the declaration of stocks in agricultural products and raw materials, as the Minister of Rural Development stated to SKAI and the show “Kalimera”, George Georgantas emphasizing that Greece has full sufficiency in wheat.

“We passed in Parliament an order with the Minister of Development, Adonis Georgiadis, with which we ask for specific products, mainly for raw materials, feed, fertilizers, wheat, etc., from the companies operating in the sector, to us declare their stocks. The relevant JMC will be issued on Monday and within 48 hours the stocks and the point where they are located must be declared “, he stated characteristically.

He added that this declaration should be updated regularly, and that the European Commission has requested that stocks of specific products be declared throughout Europe.

“All this is happening, because while we know that there is sufficiency, there must also be availability. “One should not think that one can speculate at this very difficult time”, stressed Mr. Georgantas

Asked if our country is facing the risk of shortages in basic products, he pointed out that “Greece has full sufficiency in durum wheat, which is mainly used for spaghetti and the rest relatively already.”

As he explained, in soft wheat we import about 250,000-300,000 tons per year from Ukraine and Russia and despite the war Ukraine continues to export even small quantities to all countries.

He clarified that there are many alternative markets, such as Germany, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, where loads come to the country every day. “And of course there is the alternative market of Canada and America, which have been activated to some degree. “So there is no risk to the sufficiency of soft wheat”, noted the Minister of Rural Development.

At the same time, he stated that the Ministry of Rural Development has requested that common wheat and maize be included in the coupled aid so that there is an additional incentive for farmers for the next period 2023-2027 to be able to cultivate.

Regarding sunflower oil, Mr. Georgantas pointed out that Greece has a large production of sunflower. However, in our country 90% of the production goes for the so-called biofuel and 10% for culinary use, because until now it came from Ukraine. “The sunflower is in great growth and there are constantly new areas that are cultivated. In the next period there will be a full sufficiency of our own productions. “The ceiling came in because there were very large orders,” he added.

Referring to tomorrow’s meeting of the Ministry of Regional Development under the Prime MinisterThe Minister stressed that taking into account the climate crisis, the war, but also the fact that Russia and Ukraine are the largest wheat-producing countries, there must be short-term and medium-term interventions so that there is full sufficiency and large production at good prices.
