A press conference on their experiences from the recent catastrophic fire in Chios was given today by North Aegean Regional Governor Konstantinos Moutzouris and district executives.

The regional governor praised the contribution of volunteer organizations, emphasized the organized effort and assistance of the central state and referred to the actions of the Region and its decisive contribution to the fire extinguishing. As he said, “Since Sunday night we went to Chios, we returned the whole island, where there were fireplaces, and tried to coordinate and help everyone’s efforts to erase the fire. The state worked and I have to admit it. I saw airplanes flying constantly, I saw a reaction, I saw organization. The district was there from the first moment. We provided every help, we provided fire pipes requested during the fire and yesterday. But I want to dwell on volunteers. In Chios there are 17 voluntary organizations, 11 of which are certified. If the volunteers were not, things would be very bad. The volunteers are organized and I congratulate them.

Important was the help of the Forestry Farmers, who have a lot of knowledge and we are in full cooperation with them. In Chios we have given a part of the Kalouta building to house them and we will do the same in Lesvos. And the region will come to help and support the voluntary teams. But I want to say something. The state does not strengthen the regions for civil protection. But it gives the municipalities.

Today we have convened a coordinator in Mytilene, to discuss where we are and on the basis of what we have seen in Chios see how we can fortify even more and see any omissions. The good fortune, however, is that we did not mourn human lives, no houses were burned and the fire has not entered the urban fabric, nor did it affect the mastic trees. “

In addition to Mr. Moutzouris, the press conference was also attended by Vice -Mayors Costas Aronis and Chrysostomos Hadjikyriazis, the Executive Secretary of the Aristovoulos Eleftheriou Region, the Citizen of the District Citizen of the District of Michalis The Department of Civil Protection of Lesvos, Mr. Patselis.

Chrysostomos Hadjikyriazis noted:

“I want to dwell on two things. One is the great contribution of the volunteers found in the field from the first moment and without their help we do not know what results this fire would have. The second is the presence of the Regional Governor. From 5 in the morning until late at night he was in the field, from village to village, talking to the volunteers, with the citizens, giving courage, coordinated and his presence was decisive. He left after three days of continuous presence and only when all the fronts were extinguished. “

The rest of the speakers have stood in the efforts made by the Region, so that in cooperation with other services and volunteers to avoid the worst, noting that they should be on the alert, as the weather in recent days have favored the outbreak of fires. “
